A Warped Introduction

Charlotte, North Carolina is my home.
Music is my heart.
The summer before I started third grade my grandfather gave me a violin. I remember being so excited. I was finally old enough to be in my school’s orchestra! I loved my violin. I loved orchestra. To anyone listening I’m sure we sounded awful. We were squeaky, out of tune and the songs we played were barely recognizable. This was where I first found my love for music. This is where it all began.
When I was sixteen my family moved from NY to NC. The public schools in my county didn’t have orchestras. I was offered a position in the band playing the triangle (no joke) but I gratefully declined. Instead I was involved in musical theater, choir and eventually found a local church that had an orchestra I could play in. I loved the way music made me feel. I was addicted.
When I went off to college (like most people do) I developed a close community of friends. They introduced me to a new style of living and a new way of thinking that inspired me to express myself creatively. Inspired daily by my new friends and my new outlook; I began to expand upon the creative outlets I had developed in my earlier school years. I started writing songs.
One day, after recently graduating from college, a stranger dropped a guitar off at my doorstep. How unexpected! How inspiring. I learned to play a few basic chords and my songwriting took off. I started playing regularly with some friends at Talia Espresso (the best coffee in Wilkesboro, NC). To me there was nothing more enjoyable than playing music with my friends. It made me feel a connection to the world in a way that I was unable to find in any other form.
Five years later, newly twenty seven, I’m now comfortably settling into my skin as a folk-pop-singer-songwriter-musician. In the past year I’ve recorded my first EP ‘Home’ and have played various shows at local coffee shops, art galleries and my personal favorite, The Evening Muse.
Recently I won a competition at The Evening Muse through the EIY Spring (Into Action) Tour and landed a spot in the 2011 Vans Warped Tour! No way! Yes way. I will be performing July 28th on the ‘KIA Kevin Says Stage’ in Charlotte, NC and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ll playing some songs from the EP and some new ones, and I’ll be performing with a full band / some of my closest friends.
This blog is an invitation to follow me on my journey to The Warped Tour. I hope you come along!
