I just finished a new demo, if you’d like to hear it.

This is great.

'Home'

16 Days and counting…

The set list has been made. Practices are being held. EPs are being printed.

It’s all very exciting!!!

After several trips and many hours spent at Office Depot, the EPs are finally coming together. Office Depot had a heck of a time trying to get my cover to print on already pre-cut labels so we had to do it the hard way. Individually cutting out 100 covers and hand making each EP… BUT lots of time and love is being put into making each one!

Nothing fancy, but for $5 dollars, I’m hoping it’ll be a hit at this years Warped Tour!

Click on the links below to listen / buy my EP! (It’s only $4 online! What a steal!)

Track 1: Falling Off The Ground

Track 2: The Road

Track 3: The Letter

Track 4: You Have Me

*** This EP “Home” was recorded, mixed and mastered by the very talented Christopher Kincaid of Studio Grey in the Summer / Fall of 2010. The photography was done by the very talented Sarah DeShields.

I'm New At This

There is something about a slightly out of tune piano that is so comforting. The one at my house is banged up from being moved from place to place. It’s keys are out of tune from everyday use. Although I’m sure it’d be wonderful to have a brand new piano; there’s something so relatable about one that’s slightly worn and out of tune.

Yesterday marked the beginning of the 30 day count down until my big show. I still have so much to do. Photos to take, posters to design and print… not to mention I don’t even have a single cd printed out for my merch tent! I’m new at this whole rock-star thing. Not that I consider myself a rock-star. I am merely a local songwriter and musician. But if you’re at all familiar with the Vans Warped Tour, to play at it definitely requires having a rock-star mentality.

I’ve always loved singing. When I was little, every time Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” came on the radio I would sing it at the top of my lungs. (Only when no one was at home, of course.) I remember daydreaming about singing on a stage in front of an audience like she did. I honestly never thought I’d be brave enough to do so and I definitely never thought I’d actually get the opportunity.

Right now I’m working on getting my set list together for Warped Tour. I’m working on being bolder, more confident, more honest and open in my songwriting. I have a lot of preparing to do and less than 30 days to do it! I know that my genre (folk-pop) is quite different from a lot of the bands that will be playing at Warped Tour but maybe that will make me stand out? Maybe it’ll be to my advantage.

I might not be a skinny 18 year old punk rocker… (although sometimes I wish that I was) but I still have things to offer. Songs to share. Stories to tell.

29 Days until the 2011 Vans Warped Tour! Still can’t believe it…

Peelander-Z

A little recap for those of you just tuning in…

Last month I played a show through EIY (Earn It Yourself) which landed me a spot on the Kevin Says Stage at this year’s 2011 Vans Warped Tour! I’ll be performing on July 28th (in Charlotte) alongside dozens of other bands; one of them being Peelander-Z.

Who the heck is Peelander-Z?

Peelander-Z is aJapanese punk band based in New York City. They bill themselves as a ‘Japanese Action Comic Punk band hailing from the Z area of Planet Peelander’… They perform on stage and appear in color-coordinated costumes, which they state are not costumes, but their skin. The costumes range from sentai style suits, to kimono, to rubber Playmobil style wigs … Another aspect of their routine is their on-stage antics such as human bowling (diving head-first into bowling pins), pretending to hit each other with chairs in imitation of pro-wrestlers, and mid-performance piggyback rides. They often allow audience members on stage to join in on the fun, and often dive into the audience or hang from a balcony as part of their act.

(Wikipedia)

Check out their music video “So Many Mike” and come see them play at this year’s VWT!

Charlotte, North Carolina is my home.

Music is my heart.

The summer before I started third grade my grandfather gave me a violin. I remember being so excited. I was finally old enough to be in my school’s orchestra! I loved my violin. I loved orchestra. To anyone listening I’m sure we sounded awful. We were squeaky, out of tune and the songs we played were barely recognizable. This was where I first found my love for music. This is where it all began.

When I was sixteen my family moved from NY to NC. The public schools in my county didn’t have orchestras. I was offered a position in the band playing the triangle (no joke) but I gratefully declined. Instead I was involved in musical theater, choir and eventually found a local church that had an orchestra I could play in. I loved the way music made me feel. I was addicted.

When I went off to college (like most people do) I developed a close community of friends. They introduced me to a new style of living and a new way of thinking that inspired me to express myself creatively. Inspired daily by my new friends and my new outlook; I began to expand upon the creative outlets I had developed in my earlier school years. I started writing songs.

One day, after recently graduating from college, a stranger dropped a guitar off at my doorstep. How unexpected! How inspiring. I learned to play a few basic chords and my songwriting took off. I started playing regularly with some friends at Talia Espresso (the best coffee in Wilkesboro, NC). To me there was nothing more enjoyable than playing music with my friends. It made me feel a connection to the world in a way that I was unable to find in any other form.

Five years later, newly twenty seven, I’m now comfortably settling into my skin as a folk-pop-singer-songwriter-musician. In the past year I’ve recorded my first EP ‘Home’ and have played various shows at local coffee shops, art galleries and my personal favorite, The Evening Muse.

Recently I won a competition at The Evening Muse through the EIY Spring (Into Action) Tour and landed a spot in the 2011 Vans Warped Tour! No way! Yes way. I will be performing July 28th on the ‘KIA Kevin Says Stage’ in Charlotte, NC and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ll playing some songs from the EP and some new ones, and I’ll be performing with a full band / some of my closest friends.

This blog is an invitation to follow me on my journey to The Warped Tour. I hope you come along!
